. . . . .

I woke up a couple of times during the night, sensing I was in a strange place, but managed a few hours of sleep. When I entered the large yellow kitchen for breakfast, I was dragging. At Hill’s, I worked the evening shift, so I would have to get used to my new early hours.

Four sets of eyes looked up at me, making me feel self-conscious.

“Morning, y’all.” I yawned and took a seat.

Tom announced, “I called a cab for eight-fifteen. Plenty of time for breakfast.” He rubbed his hands together. “Smells great.”

He and Jolene chatted easily with the Harrises. Methodist stuff about their ministries. I ate and tuned it out.

“Such a delicious breakfast, Constance,” Jolene said. “What do you put in your French Toast batter? Nutmeg?”

Recipe stuff. I tuned that out, too, and wondered what my day would bring. Could I trust these strangers? So far, no alarm bells. But the whole church thing made me a little nervous. Methodists—they were everywhere. On the positive side, I had my own space, so I wasn’t literally living under their roof, and working at the vet was something I could get behind.

Hank shuffled in, sighed, and sat on my feet.

“I see Hank has found a new favorite pair of feet to call his own,” Constance said.

I smiled and reached down to pat him. “I’ve always been a cat person, but I do like this little guy. He sighs like a human—so funny.”

Doc finished his meal and stood. “Got to round up Sammy. Have some prep work before we open.”

Tom rose and shook Doc’s hand. “Thank you for your hospitality. If you ever need tickets for a Red Raider’s game, just give me a call.” They exchanged the “guns up” sign.

“I’ll keep that in mind.” Doc smiled. “Pleasure to meet you and the missus.” He nodded at my sister-in-law. “Jolene.”

Sammy appeared from the hallway, went to the door, and pawed the leash hanging from the knob. “Cat’s got a clock in his belly,” Doc said on his way out the door.

Constance said, “We’ll go over in about twenty minutes, Janie.”

Tom and Jolene said their goodbyes to Constance, and I walked them out to the street to catch their cab.

“Thanks for rescuing me, Tom. I feel pretty good about the Harrises. And the job.”

True about the job, but did I mean it about my host and hostess, or was it just the right thing to say? Too soon to know.

I turned to Jolene and set my feet, so the anticipated hug didn’t knock me over. “I’m a little embarrassed about meeting you with all holy hell coming down around my ears. You’ve been kind, and I’ll never forget it.”

Jolene threw her arms around me again. She was one exuberant hugger. “Honey, no need to be embarrassed. We’re family. I know you’ll do well here. You’ll let us know how you’re settlin’ in?”

“Sure.
